1K a year 18 hours ago 18 hours ago 18 hours ago Description Under general supervision, to provide instruction in the safe use of pistol, rifles or shotguns at the Parks and Recreation Department public shooting facility and to assist the Parks Rangemaster II in the operation and maintenance of the facility, storerooms and coordination of special events.
COVID - 19 Risk Tier - Intermediate Risk Typical Tasks Checks-in public visitors, inspects firearms for safety and compliance with current gun laws; Collects appropriate fees; counts monies received and records daily receipts; balances daily transactions; Provides information and responds to questions from the public, in person, or by telephone; Performs firing range maintenance duties, which include maintaining targets, range equipment and the range facility; Monitors the firing line activity for safe firearm use and calls cease fires as necessary to facilitate safe operations; Monitors and maintains shooting facilities inventories and provides resale service of various supplies to the public; Prepares purchase requisitions, and performs other storeroom/range shop duties as assigned; Receives, stores, stocks, and verifies orders for proper quantity and description; Inspects and repairs Trap and Skeet Machines; Operates a forklift for loading targets into upper skeet houses; stocks targets into machines, and resets machines for game variations; Assists in the coordination of special events, league use, and Amateur Trapshooting Association and National Skeet Shooting Association events; May conduct public shooting classes; May lead range assistants and volunteers in range maintenance, storeroom, and range shop duties; May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required; Performs related work as required.
Employment Standards Sufficient education and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks and the attainment of the knowledge and abilities listed below.
Training and Experience Note:
The knowledge, skills and abilities are acquired through a combination of training and experience equivalent to one (1) year of experience in law enforcement, military firing range, or private firing range work which involved providing basic instruction in pistol, rifle and shotgun use, and related range maintenance and firearms repair.
Possession of a valid California Driver's License prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County Driver's Permit.
Certificates:
Must possess current certification as a firearm instructor or NRA Range Safety Officer or must be able to obtain certification as a rifle, pistol, and shotgun instructor or NRA Range Safety Officer from an appropriate sanctioning body within 6 months of employment.
Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid CPR card for the professional rescuer, and Basic First Aid card before the completion of the probationary period Possession and maintenance of a Forklift Operators Certification within six (6) months of appointment.
Special Requirements:
Must submit to a hearing and blood baseline physical prior to commencement of work.
Must submit to regular testing as part of a continued employment condition.
Must be willing to work odd and irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays and be willing to wear and maintain a department uniform.
Safely move, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds of materials and equipment.
Knowledge of:
State, Federal, and local laws and related regulations pertaining to the acquisition, firing, repair and disposal of weapons; The nomenclature, function and operation of various rifles, pistols, and shotguns including the appropriate ammunition for each; Marksmanship functions such as clearing firearms, maintenance of weapons, firing positions, hand loading of ammunition, and firing range procedures; The occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the operation of a firing range; Basic computer applications (e.
g.
, word processing, spreadsheet, database, etc.
); Knowledge of various Trap and Skeet shooting games, tournaments, and league operation; Basic financial record-keeping and basic mathematics.
Ability to:
Provide individual and group instruction in the safe handling and accurate shooting of riles, pistols and shotguns and firing range safety; effectively instruct volunteers and range assistants in the safe operation of a shooting facility.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Reason logically and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Inspect and repair County-owned shotguns and Trap and Skeet Machines; Establish and maintain effective relationships with the public and co-workers; Keep records, accurately perform arithmetical calculations and collect money; Operate a cash register and/or a computerized point of sale workstation; Effectively lead range assistants and volunteers in range maintenance and storeroom duties.
